LGBTQ+ Americans

LGBTQ funders and activists continue the work towards equality following this year’s 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and the 53rd anniversary of Compton’s Cafeteria Riots.  And Alliance for Justice is proud to support their advocacy for justice and full equality. We are excited to re-release a toolkit with tips and examples of advocacy for nonprofits working on equality issues.

Nonprofits, such as AFJ Members National Center for Transgender Equality, Equality Federation, Lambda Legal, National Center for Lesbian Rights, National LGBTQ Taskforce, Sexuality Information and Education Council of the US, Transgender Law Center, and the Human Rights Campaign Foundation have a large role to play in advancing equality for members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community. Examples of advocacy abound, including raising awareness and speaking out on unqualified, anti-LGBTQ judicial nominees, recognizing inclusive employers, lobbying for the elimination of conversion therapy, challenging the President’s ban on transgender members in the military, and working to defeat discriminatory ballot measures.

Given their unique tax structure, nonprofits must conform their advocacy efforts to comply with tax and election laws. Our LGBTQ Advocacy Toolkit provides examples of advocacy efforts by nonprofits that support LGBTQ equality measures throughout the country along with a reference to the tax rules that apply. The LGBTQ Advocacy Toolkit supplements our more in-depth resources: Rules of the Game-A Guide to Election-Related Activities for 501(c)(3) Organizations; Being a Player-A Guide to IRS Lobbying Regulations for Advocacy Charities; and The Connection-Strategies for Creating and Operating 501(c)(3)s, 501(c)(4)s, and Political Organizations.
